AS THE clock on Oxford's Carfax Tower struck 11 yesterday morning shoppers stopped to pay their respects to those killed in the First World War.

The two-minute silence was observed to mark Armistice Day, always held on the November 11 to commemorate the end of the global conflict in 1918.

It was a scene replicated across the county's workplaces and schools, with everywhere from Thames Valley Police's headquarters to Oxford Magistrates Court observing the silence.

A special service was also held by Oxford Mayor Craig Simmons in the town hall.

It follows Remembrance Sunday services held throughout Oxfordshire this weekend, with hundreds lining St Giles for the city's own memorial.
