THOSE who died in war were remembered at a ceremony in Westgate’s Leiden Square which also marked the Oxford's links with its oldest twin city.

A Dutch-style floral wreath was laid by Oxford Mayor, Craig Simmons, and Henri Lenferink, the Burgomaster of Leiden, in the Netherlands on Saturday.

The inscription said: “In memory of all victims of war, from the Lord Mayor of Oxford, the Burgomaster of Leiden and all those living in our twin cities.”

The ceremony took place around the mosaic laid in the square two years ago to mark Oxford’s long association with the Dutch university city.

A traditional poppy wreath was laid by twin city member and former serviceman Brian Hawtin.

Members of the Oxford Vivace choir sang a medley of songs and led the singing of the two national anthems.

The association between Oxford and Leiden dates from 1946 when European nations were seeking peace and friendship after six years of war. It is the oldest of Oxford’s eight twin city links.

Mr Lenferink also attended the city's Remembrance Sunday service at St Giles laying a wreath at the war memorial.
