MOTORISTS and pedestrians will notice a change to a road junction labelled 'the most dangerous rat run in Oxford'.

County councillors have managed to raise funds to make a road crossing in Florence Park safe.

Improvements were made to the junction at Littlehay Road, Cornwallis Road and Rymers Lane.

County councillors for Cowley, John Sanders and Christine Simm raised almost £30,000 for the work.

It features bollards at each corner to prevent cars mounting the pavements, sharper corners to slow down turning traffic and raised road surfaces to slow traffic and make the junction wheelchair and cycle friendly.

This spot has seen three injury-accidents a year over the past six years.

One serious accident in March this year involved two cars crashing and knocking a cyclist off their bike. The cyclist was taken to hospital with a broken hip.

Mr Sanders wrote in a letter that he could not stand 'idly by until someone is actually killed at the crossing' and celebrated the completion of the works yesterday along with residents and council representatives.

Engineer Dave Tidball said: "The junction has been highlighted as a safety concern in the area due to a combination of vehicle traffic with heavy foot and cycle traffic in the vicinity of one of Oxford's largest parks and a secondary school.

"My colleagues and I believe this will be a huge benefit for everybody."
