A new Harry Potter shop in Oxford could spell trouble for the city's very own Diagon Alley.

Flaggs and Watsons in Broad Street have been selling merchandise based on the novels and movies featuring JK Rowling's magic creations for a number of years.

And in March Sally Moss and her sister Joanne opened The Shop of Secrets, Oxford's first specialist Harry Potter store.

But now competition could soon be winging its way to the high street, with a new store set to open in Cornmarket Street.

Contractors working to fit out the former L'Occitane store in Cornmarket have told the Oxford Mail that it will be a Harry Potter store, although no opening date has been given.

Sally Moss, co-director of The Shop of Secrets, said: "We thought we would have less than a year as the only bespoke Harry Potter shop because everyone wants a piece of the action.

"It's a bit disappointing that another Harry Potter store is opening in the city centre but I do think we can hold our own.

"We have a very atmospheric shop and a good reputation with our customers.

"All our staff are Harry Potter obsessives and take the time to chat to customers - I'm not sure our rivals will be able to match that."

Joanne Moss added: "We work very hard to renew our specialist stock and get the items our customers want.

"We are very busy and we are getting ready for Halloween.

"Local people and visitors come here and enjoy what we do - we are wondering if the Cornmarket shop will open before Christmas."
