A NEW Sainsbury’s Local store will open in Frideswide Square next month.

The new supermarket branch is being built on the ground floor of the Royal Oxford Hotel, close to Said Business School and the railway station.

Earlier this month contractors started work to fit out the new store and now signs have gone up outside revealing the opening date, Thursday, November 14.

The supermarket chain has been given planning permission to construct the mini-supermarket on the ground floor of the hotel.

Property consultants VSL said earlier that the supermarket giant, which also runs stores in Magdalen Street, St Aldate’s and the Westgate Centre, has bought a 15-year lease.

The space was being marketed for restaurants before Britain’s third largest supermarket chain snapped it up.

Plans included a bright orange cash point, matching the overall theme of the shop.

Orange and brown signs saying Sainsbury’s Local are also expected to feature, and the store will sell oven baked bread, fresh fruit and vegetables, beer and wine and is expected to be open every day from 7am to 11pm.

The new supermarket is being called Sainsbury’s Oxford Park End Local.

The supermarket has a licence to sell alcohol and Liberal Democrat county councillor John Howson earlier expressed concern about alcohol being sold on match days when Oxford United are at home.

The Royal Oxford Hotel will be unaffected by the new arrangement.
