THE Westgate Centre has confirmed this morning's evacuation was a planned fire drill.

Pictures showed a small crowd of people outside the shopping centre after fire alarms sounded at about 9.20am.

Security officers could also be seen blocking the entrance to the shopping centre.

Westgate's official Twitter account posted shortly before the test, saying: "Please be aware that there will be a scheduled fire evacuation test this morning at approx 9.20am.

"All staff are fully briefed for this test and customers should be not concerned."

A spokesperson said the drill was 'successful' and the centre has returned to normal.
