A FIELD in Bicester was left charred and destroyed after flames tore through the scrubland yesterday.

Firefighters from Bicester were scrambled to Caversfield to put out the field fire.

A video posted by Bicester Fire Station showed how the fire savaged a large patch of grassland and scorched remains scattering the field.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service commented: "Fortunately early calls from residents meant we were able to catch it early on but a reminder of the hazards in this drier weather."

There were at least two crews called to the fire which happened about 1pm, before being called to another field fire in Banbury a few hours later.

Elsewhere, firefighters were scrambled to West Oxfordshire as well when another field went up in flames about 5.30pm.

Crews from Charlbury and Witney fire stations supported two 4x4 vehicles in dealing with a stubble fire that had got out of control.

It measured about 500m x 100m according to firefigthers.

Crews worked with the farmers who were harvesting and had quickly ploughed a firebreak, helping contain the fire and stop it spreading.

The fire service commented: "Today[Aug 5] crews have dealt with several field fires near Bicester, Banbury and Charlbury plus multiple other incidents making it a busy day."
