CLIMATE campaigners Extinction Rebellion are planning to hold a demonstration on Cornmarket Street.

The group says it plans to hold an 'informal street party' in front of Barclays Bank from 11am to 1pm.

Members who previously blocked traffic on Botley Road say they will stage a much more gentle action today with folk music, and handing out leaflets.

Activists will also be demonstrating about Barclays’ ‘continued involvement and investment in fossil fuels’, again urging the bank to divest and for customers to switch to other providers.

It is not the first time the group have protested about Barclays’ environmental record.

Spokesman Ben Kenward explained: “Governments and companies have known for decades that unless we move away from fossil fuels, global heating will destroy lives across the globe, causing famine and creating refugees.

“Despite that, Barclays continues to be the number one villain on the UK banking scene in terms of fossil fuel investments, particularly tar sands which poisons water and fracking which causes home-destroying mini-earthquakes.

“They’ve been asked nicely to stop so many times - disrupting them now is a last resort to highlight the problem.”

Barclays spokeswoman Julia Husband said: “We recognise that climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing the world today, and are determined to do all we can to support the transition to a low carbon economy, while also ensuring that global energy needs continue to be met.

“We continue to develop our green products suite and in 2018 we facilitated £27.3bn in social and environmental financing across our business including green bonds and renewable financing.”
