A 'LOCAL hero' was crowned at the official opening of Witney's newest care home.

Luke Fisher, from Witney, was announced as a hero at the launch of the Millers Grange home on Curbridge Road.

Mr Fisher was nominated by Louise Gorrod on behalf of her son Jack, who the carer has supported for more than seven years.

The 'Witney heroes' competition was set up to search for people and organisations who go the extra mile for their community.

Witney mayor, Duncan Enright, cut the ribbon at Millers Grange in a ceremony last week, which was also attended by Lawrie Stratford, Oxfordshire County Council’s cabinet member for adult social care and public health.

Children from the neighbouring Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School provided guests with a musical performance, while vintage singer Beth Belle entertained the crowd with tunes from the 1940s.

Therapy dogs from Canine Concern Oxfordshire gained a lot of attention, with residents also entertained by flower arranging skills, a keep fit demonstration and the home's dementia-friendly 'magic table'.

Mollie Wright, from Our Lady of Lourdes, was named winner of a short story competition organised by Millers Grange.

The home has 52 ensuite bedrooms and has its own cinema, hairdressing salon and café.
