Among the hundreds taking part in the colourful procession are pupils from Windmill Primary School in Headington.

Inspired by the carnival’s ‘Space is the Place’ theme the youngsters will be dressed up as space men and women, complete with jet packs made out of bottles and their own 'Windmill planet'.

Teacher Danielle Saunders, who has led the group of around 20 Year 4 pupils, said: "It's a great theme because it is really accessible and they have enjoyed coming up with their own costumes.

"We had the children bring in items from home and then work from there so everything is sustainable as well."

Also among the interstellar line-up will be four special parade structures created by Oxford Physics researchers who teamed up with East Oxford community groups, including Oxfordshire Mind and Oxford Spires Academy.

A rocket-inspired car, complete with red smoke, made by a team of apprentices from the Cowley MINI plant, will also take part in the procession. The group wowed crowds last year with their ‘bullnose Mini’ which featured flashing lights for eyes.

After the main event there will be music spread across stages throughout the East Oxford road and its side streets, plus dozens of food stalls filled with global dishes.
