THE first electric Harley Davidson was among the cutting-edge technology unveiled at a summit in Oxford yesterday.

Vehicles that could soon be seen on the city's streets have gone on display outside the Said Business School as part of a two day electric vehicle summit.

Aimed at accelerating moves towards an electric future, the event has brought together council leaders, car manufacturers and transport businesses to discuss challenges and opportunities.

Harley Davidson, who have their European headquarters in Oxford Business Park, were showing the bike for the first time in the UK.

Onlookers were invited to try it out on a rolling road in front of the university building.

David Everett, who has been involved in he product's development said: "It's a fully electric motorcycle - the first of its kind, that we're aware of.

"It's a statement of where we believe the future is going.

"It's built to the same specifications as any other Harley and is a premium product.

"It can go from naught to sixty in three seconds and has a range of between 88 and 144 miles.

"Everybody who has tried it out has left with a big smile on their face."

The bike, which will be available to buy in the autumn, was joined by a new bike/van cross-over that has been designed by Oxfordshire company EAV Cargo.

It will be used to make last mile deliveries in congested city centres.

Car sharing scheme Co-Wheels also had an electric BMW on display - one of ten it is rolling out across Oxford in the coming weeks.
