HUNDREDS of music fans gathered at Wallingford Rugby Club at the weekend for the town’s Rugfest celebration.

This year the festival was run over three days with Friday night hosting the Blues and Beer event.

The Old Post Office made sure there was plenty to eat and drink for mums and dads, while there were lots of activities for children on the kids’ stage on Saturday and Sunday.

There were also free crafts in the arts and crafts tent for children plus circus skills and drum circles curated by Rhythm Zone.

After Britpop legends Scouting for Girls performed at last year’s 10th anniversary Rugfest, this year pop favourites The Feeling drew a big crowd on Saturday.

The award-winning band, led by Dan Gillespie Sells, drew heavily on debut album Twelve Stops and Home, and got the crowd singing along to hit songs including Love It When You Call, which closed the set.

Closing Saturday’s night entertainment were second headliners Freak Power, the funk band formed by Norman Cook in the early 1990s.

Light Years and My Darling Clementine played on Sunday, before The Echo closed the festival with their infectious brand of rock, pop and ska.

Rugfest organisers said in the programme that the event was now ‘quite rightly recognised as Wallingford’s summer music festival’.

A spokesman said: “Now in its 11th year, and hosted by Wallingford Rugby Club, this ever expanding summer festival offers fans the very best musical talent from across the country, tons of activities for all the family and a superb range of beverages and cuisine.”

He added that Rugfest was delighted to be able to accommodate the Blues and Beer Festival.

“Losing its 26-year veneue in 2017 - the Old Regal cinema - was a massive blow to this long-standing event,” the programme said.

Wallingford Rugby Club was founded in 1967, initially as Cholsey RFC. About 400 children now play rugby on a Sunday morning and there are three senior teams, a veterans’ team a touch rugby team and a women’s team.
