A 61-year-old from Oxford will appear in court today following the Extinction Rebellion protests in London last month.

Rowan Tilly, of Percy Street, East Oxford, says she plans to plead not guilty at a hearing in Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

She is charged with an offence contrary to Section 14 of the Public Order Act 1986, after being arrested on Waterloo Bridge on April 21.

Ms Tilly says she is pleading her innocence on the grounds that her actions were undertaken in the interest of a greater danger to the planet.

Meanwhile, another Oxford protester from the same group also protested his innocence this month.

Michael Betts, from Walton Crescent, Jericho, pleaded not guilty to wilfully obstructing a highway with an unlicensed vehicle at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, May 9.

The environmental protesters caused travel chaos in London last month in an effort to draw attention to the climate crisis.

45-year-old Mr Betts was charged following an incident on April 21 and will appear at the same court on July 26, after being remanded on unconditional bail.

Extinction Rebellion spokeswoman Jo Hamilton has said that more than 150 people from Oxfordshire participated in the demonstrations last month.
