AN 'EXTREMELY drunk and stoned' thief crept into a woman's house after a binge drink and drugs session before stealing cash and vaping equipment.

Spanish national Anas Mesbah-Semleli, formerly of East Oxford, now of Cambridge Road, Coventry, was spared jail at court yesterday despite leaving his victim 'traumatised' after the break-in.

The 21-year old was set to stand trial for the single count of burglary but at Oxford Crown Court yesterday he entered a plea of guilty instead.

Outlining the incident prosecutor John Upton said that the burglary took place sometime after 5am on the morning of May 29 last year at a house in Yarnton.

He said that the home owner had been out walking her dog that morning and when she returned she noticed the door and garden gate were both opened.

She heard noises inside the house, the court heard, and shortly after she spotted the burglar Mesbah-Semleli coming down her stairs with an e-cigarette device.

After confronting him about the apparent break-in he eventually fled the scene and police later found him having hid in some bushes nearby.

He was found to have on him the vaping equipment and charger as well as £65 in cash.

Despite the matter initially going to trial he admitted his guilt yesterday and was sentenced at the same hearing.

The home owner read out a victim personal statement at court yesterday in which she described ongoing psychological trauma as a result of the break-in.

In mitigation Mesbah-Semleli's defence barrister Francesca Anderson said that her client had been out celebrating the end of his studies that day together with friends.

He had drank heavily and smoked large quantities of cannabis, the court heard, before going to Atik nightclub and then to a friend's house in Yarnton.

It was while he was there, 'extremely drunk and stoned' that he wandered to the house and stole the items, with 'no idea' why he had done it.

She added that he was remorseful and said: "He says he is very sorry for what he has done and wants to apologise for his actions.

"He said he could not really explain as to why he did that."

The court also heard that Mesbah-Semleli , originally from Madrid, and living near Cowley Road at the time, has no previous convictions and has since moved to Coventry.

Sentencing, Nigel Daly said in light of the mitigation he could suspend any jail term.

Mesbah-Semleli was handed a 12-month jail term, suspended for 18 months and made subject to a community order.

This order will include 240 hours of unpaid work, a three-month overnight curfew and compensation to his victim of £380. He must also pay a statutory victim surcharge.
