AN OXFORD college narrowly missed out on winning the University Challenge title in a nail-biting final.

Edinburgh University beat St Edmund's Hall - known as Teddy Hall - by 155 points to 140 in the grand final of the notoriously difficult BBC quiz show on Sunday night.

The first non-Oxbridge finalist in six years, the four-man team from Edinburgh won with the last question of the night.

It was the university's first ever win on the show which has been running since the 1960s.

They were also the first Scottish institution to win since 1984.

The team featured Max Fitz-James, Matt Booth, Marco Malusa and Robbie Campbell Hewson.

They had previously picked up points by naming country's flags based on the colours featured in popular songs.

Teddy Hall lost despite having Freddy Leo, known as the 'fastest on the buzzer' on its side.

Mr Leo had made headlines in the college's run to the final for being the highest scoring player of the season and his 'combative style'.

Novelist and former University Challenge contestant Sebastian Faulks presented the winning team with their prize.

Captain Mr Fitz James said he has trained for the competition by watching previous episodes with the rest of his team.
