The bar opened following a major revamp of the former Stan James bookmakers.

The business is being run by James Salter, his wife Henrietta Salter-Collins, and her brother Joel Collins.

Mrs Salter-Collins said she was delighted with the reception and the staff team added on Facebook: "Wow!! Thank you so much people of Abingdon for making our opening night so fabulous."

The bar’s name was chosen to reflect the building’s history of textiles (a mercer is an old word for a fabric dealer), then given a lighthearted tweak.

It's a busy time for the High Street in Abingdon - on the other side of the street a new gin bar, The Old Chemist, is being created and is due to open on April 21.

The owners of The Old Chemist were among those who called in at The Tipsy Mercer to offer their best wishes.

Harry Oliver-Brown, who visited with friends, added on Facebook: "Great stylish decor and lively atmosphere with a wide range of alcohol! Definitely the place to be in Abingdon for a few drinks with friends!"
