JUST Eat is removing all zero star restaurants from their service, potentially impacting on Oxford eateries.

By May 1, any takeaway that has a hygiene rating of zero will be banned from the site until it gets at least a three star rating.

Grillers and Pizzas in Cowley Road is currently the only zero star restaurant in Oxford at risk of not showing up on the popular takeaway website.

Globe Newsmarket and Branca Food are both also zero rated, according to the Scores on the Doors website, following recent inspections which found them needing 'urgent improvement'.

But these are not currently available on Just Eat.

In Wallingford the Anokhi Indian restaurant could be removed from the service as it was zero rated during an inspection on December 6.

In an Oxford City Council report, Globe Newsmarket was said to have: "Little or no technical knowledge. Little or no appreciation of hazards or quality control. No food safety management system."

Branca Food in Walton Street, Jericho, meanwhile, was temporarily closed down in October 2017, when staff were accused of forging temperature records.

An inspection found it posed an ‘imminent risk of injury to health.’

It reopened the following day after issues were addressed but still has a zero star rating, according to the Scores on the Doors website.

In August last year Grizzlers & Pizzas in Cowley Road was also temporarily closed over 'heavy fly activity'.

Multiple failures included 'filthy conditions, no hot water, contamination risks and heavy fly activity'.

The move by Just Eat is part of a £1million programme aimed at raising the food hygiene standards of restaurants it works with.

It is also offering to fund food hygiene and safety training for restaurants with a hygiene rating of two or lower.

Just Eat's UK managing director Graham Corfield said: “We know that running a small, independent business is not without its challenges, and food hygiene and safety is a vital area that restaurants need to get right.

“This is why we have an ever-evolving programme of work dedicated to raising food safety standards across the entire takeaway sector. The vast majority of the UK’s takeaway restaurants have good food hygiene standards already, but today’s investment means those that need extra help can now access bespoke support for free."
