A MAN who sexually assaulted a woman inside an East Oxford home is yet to be caught by police.

The intruder crept into a home in Divinity Road at about 4am on Saturday, through an unlocked window, before attacking his victim.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman confirmed no arrests had been made in connection with the incident, as of 4pm today - meaning the man is still on the loose.

Police described the man who carried out the sex assault as Asian, in his 20s or 30s, with dark hair.

Officers suspect the man has a strong local link and might live or work in the area.

Today members of Oxford Central Mosque in nearby Manzil Way, off Cowley Road, helped to apprehend a suspicious man who they said was then arrested by police.

The mosque has been assisting police in the Divinity Road investigation and wondered if the incident might have been linked, but Thames Valley Police has since confirmed that no arrests have been made in the sex attack case.

A committee member, who asked not to be named, questioned the man after he jumped from a back garden in Divinity Road, over a wall and into a garden at the mosque.

The intruder was spotted at about 12.15pm and, noticing he had a tag on his ankle, members kept him on site until several police cars arrived.

The committee member said: "About six officers pinned him down. He was handcuffed and they put a spit mask on him and tied his feet.

"He was holding a metal bar and some sort of wooden weapon."

The mosque's press spokesman Faisal Aziz said: "We have a duty of care to our whole community and we are very proud of our committee member - he put his own safety at risk."

Police have not yet confirmed what the man was arrested on suspicion of.

Zaheer Qureshi, secretary of the Oxford Central Mosque, said a police officer visited on Monday and informed them of a 'serious incident' on Divinity Road.

He said the officer told him: "Somebody is on the loose within a one mile radius."
