THE Government is being urged to make sealable fuel tank linings compulsory for HGVs to cut down on traffic delays on the A34.

Abingdon Town Council will discuss a motion by leader Mike Badcock tonight calling for the change.

The motion says the matter should be considered 'urgently', stating: "The cost and effect on the area served by the A34 by diesel fuel spillages and increasing regularity of delays caused is unacceptable."

The A34 was closed southbound until 10pm earlier this month after an early morning HGV crash and large diesel spillage.

About 100m of road surface had been damaged by 500 litres of fuel.

The meeting will take place at Abingdon's Guildhall in the Roysse room from 7pm.
