DRIVERS will be unable to park on one part of a city centre street for up to 18 months as an Oxford college undergoes a controversial redevelopment.

Parking bays will be temporarily shut on the west side of Cowley Place while St Hilda's College builds a new block containing 59 student bedrooms, a common room and office.

The order, which comes into force on Monday, covers a 30 metre stretch on the west side of the road.

Traffic signs will be displayed to indicate when the measures apply, with the order lasting for either 18 months or until the works have been completed.

The building's tower was approved by councillors last year, despite standing 19.3 metres above street level - more than a metre higher than city guidance.
