AN OXFORD MP has called the Government's approach to rights for EU citizens 'incompetent and callous'.

Anneliese Dodds, Labour MP for Oxford East, hit out after the immigration minister, Caroline Nokes, provided a completely different position on the issue to that provided in a letter by the Prime Minister, Theresa May.

Ms Dodds' said Mrs May had reassured her that citizens would not need to prove anything beyond continuous residence of the UK and pass a criminal records test to claim settled status after Brexit.

But now Ms Nokes has responded to a parliamentary question on this matter by reinserting additional requirements for EU residents - including proving employment.

Ms Dodds said she had spoken to people living in Oxford who are foster carers, disabled and single parents – all of whom could find it difficult to prove these additional requirements.

She added: "The Prime Minister needs to inform Caroline Nokes MP that she is wrong and that extra requirements will not be placed on our EU neighbours and friends. If not, she will be breaking the promise that her government made."
