BOXERCISE, pickleball and movement to music were on the menu as a leisure centre threw open its doors for a special event.

Windrush Leisure Centre, on Witan Way, held a 'Have a Go' open day on Thursday, featuring a wide range of activities aimed at the over-55s and those with a disability.

Dozens of prospective new members sampled whichever sessions took their fancy, from wheelchair dance to walking football.

The event proved popular and Rod Noble, area community sports manager of GLL Better, which runs the centre, hoped it would encourage others to get active.

He said: “The day has been very successful and there has been a lot of interest from people who now say they will bring their friends.

"The message is that everyone is welcome to come and have a go.”

One of those who enjoyed the day was Emily Davis, 17, from Witney, who took part in the dancing and disability football sessions.

She said: “I really liked the dancing and I am sure it will make me fitter.

"It’s also a good place to come and enjoy yourself with your friends.”

Among the activities on offer was walking football, which is aimed at over-50s who want to keep playing the game at a slower pace.

This was mixed with more unusual activities, including boxercise, a boxing-based high intensity interval training class, and pickleball, a paddle sport combining elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis.

West Oxfordshire District Council's leisure team works with GLL Better to help residents of all ages and abilities find a sport or activity for them.

Jeanette Baker, cabinet member for leisure and health, said: “There is a wonderful range of activities at the leisure centre, many of which people may not even have heard of and the Have a Go day was a great way to showcase it.

“The idea is that there is something for everyone of any age or ability.

"Personally I enjoyed playing the drums. It’s great fun and so easy to get involved.”

The Windrush was relaunched in September after a £560,000 makeover, which included better disabled access.

Meanwhile, the gym was extended by 140sq m to create a mezzanine floor and new windows and air conditioning were installed.
