RESIDENTS can try out boxercise, pickleball, wheelchair dance and more at a leisure centre open day on Thursday.

Windrush Leisure Centre, Witney, is holding a free 'Have a Go' day for over-55s and those with a disability from 10am to 4.30pm.

The event aims to highlight the range of sports and activities that people may not have tried before, with other sessions including movement to music and walking football.

The latter, which is aimed at over-50s, has proved particularly popular since the newly refurbished centre reopened in September.

David Coop has been playing walking football for about 18 months since being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

Mr Coop, 68, said: “Finding out I had diabetes was a real shock and very isolating but diet and exercise helps and I got involved in walking football after being introduced to it through my GP at the Windrush surgery in Witney.

“At my last review, my glucose levels had fallen and my weight and cholesterol had also dropped.

"I am feeling much better mentally and physically and a lot of that is down to exercise.”

At the official launch earlier this month, West Oxfordshire District Council revealed the number of users in the last two months had risen by five per cent.
