POLICE say they are looking at bodycam video footage and CCTV of disorder involving fans after Saturday's match between Oxford United and Bristol Rovers.

Officers are working with both football clubs and Thames Valley Police  to help identify those responsible.

It comes after a police dog was hit by a bottle when 'significant disorder' broke out following Oxford United's visit to the Memorial Stadium.

Police have so far arrested one man.

Officers and four dogs attempted to tackle several incidents of post-match violence between rival fans near Rovers' Memorial Stadium, with fireworks, chairs and bottles reportedly being thrown at police and their dogs.

A video on the Bristol Post appears to show Bristol fans chasing Oxford rivals up the street, with glasses and bottles being thrown.

One animal was struck by a glass bottle but emerged unharmed.

Residents in the area also reported smashed glass in the streets and pubs on nearby Gloucester Road shutting during the disorder, which one dog handler estimated involved '60 to 70' people.

Avon and Somerset Police is in the process of reviewing body worn video footage and CCTV footage of the disorder.

Officers are also working with both football clubs and Thames Valley Police footage to help identify those responsible.

Sergeant Stephen Bell from Avon and Somerset Police’s Football Unit said: “These are not real football fans and they give genuine supporters a bad name.

“Their behaviour was totally unacceptable and resulted in a shocking level of violence that will have impacted the local community.

“We are working hard to identify those responsible and deal with them robustly both through the courts and with football banning orders."

One man was arrested during the violence and the Avon and Somerset Constabulary dog section took to Twitter on Saturday night to speak out against the actions of a minority.

The tweet read: “Some of our dogs were involved in the serious disorder that occurred today at Bristol Rovers v Oxford.

“PD Jabba, PD Bali, PD Ash, and PD Fozzy were fantastic and stopped the disorder getting even worse.

"It showed what an invaluable resource they are.”

Other dog handlers caught up in the violence also condemned the actions of a minority of fans.

Twitter user K9Scooby said: “Most violent outbreaks of football disorder I have seen for a long time. Bottles, cans, and fireworks all used as weapons.

“60/70+ actively fighting with full on aggression. I know a minority, but shame on you Bristol Rovers and Oxford United. Dogs held the fort.”

Another account, BristolHandler, added: “To the football 'fans' that threw fireworks, chairs, and bottles at us today, you are an utter disgrace.

“With no care for the other decent fans with their children and elderly people in the street as well who could have been hit.

“You are utter scum. You drew, dogs win.”

The match finished 0-0.
