Bricklayers celebrated a milestone million in 1988 for the works being done on the Gloucester Green redevelopment in the city centre.

They broke ground the previous year on the £16m project which hoped to transform the key site in Oxford.

But the 22 bricklayers and hod carriers said they had since used about one million bricks since they started work a year ago.

The group were employed by sub-contractors north Oxford Brickwork.

Mr Royston Fletcher, a firm director, said: "They are a good hard-working team who deserve some praise and recognition.

"It is like going back to college for some of them because the work is so involved with arches and 45 degree angles."

More than 100 people were set to work on the site.

The Edwardian-style office block was close to completion at the time and work was starting on the shops and flats which form part of the development.
