SUMMERTOWN residents are becomingly increasingly concerned by anti-social behaviour after a teenager was stabbed near Alexandra Park.

A consultation on potentially making changes to the park has revealed a number of issues.

Oxford City councillor Andrew Gant said parents of young children felt they couldn't use the play equipment because of teenagers.

He added that the youths were staying in the park until late at night and disturbing nearby residents.

Mr Gant said: "Alexandra Park is an ongoing issue, there's quite a lot of anti-social behaviour.

"There's a lot of concern particularly after a teenager was stabbed nearby.

"Young children haven't been able to use the play area there because it is used by teenagers and the neighbours have also reported being disturbed by their noise - they do tend to be there late at night."

He added that he was speaking to the city council's parks officers and urged people to respond to the consultation on the area's future use.

A 17-year-old boy was left with serious neck and arm injuries after being stabbed during a fight at the junction of Middle Way and Rogers Street on February 15.

Forensic specialists and plain clothes police officers were at the scene for most of following day conducting door to door enquiries.

More open space was created at the park last year following an Oxford City Council plan to cut the number of tennis courts.

A Summertown and St Margaret's neighbourhood forum consultation on the future of the park has been running for the past two months.

Sam Clarke, chairman of the Summertown and St Margaret's neighbourhood forum, said the aim was to create a ten-year plan for the park.

Mr Clarke said he wasn't aware of any responses directly citing the stabbing but said there was general concern over groups of teens.

He said: "There is a problem with teens, some of the neighbours have had bad experiences with them being noisy and chucking things over their fences.

"One of the ideas was to have a 'phone tree' with charging points in it and benches so they would have an area to socialise.

As well as designated areas for teenagers, others suggestions have included a kiosk and links to the nearby Turrill Sculpture Garden.

He added: "We have accepted that there will always be lots of tennis courts at the park, we are not changing that but we are talking about the rest of it and how it could be better used by everyone."
