AT 24 hours notice Taunton District Scout Fellowship found they would not be able to go ahead with the meeting that had been arranged for April.. Fortunately Michael, the previous chairman, offered to fill the space.

He looked out 50 of his slides, which he had taken in Somerset, and all that the rest of the members had to do on April 3 was to identify the places shown on the screen, or sometimes say why they were famous.

One of the slides was of the memorial plaque to T.S. Elliot (in West Coker Church) and another was of the house in Winsford where Ernest Bevin was raised.

Michael took members to the extreme eastern boundary of the county, for the memorial to King Alfred, and then to Lorna Doone country with Oare Church, while another slide slipped over the border in the west at Lynmouth. When the answers were given and scores noted, Yvonne's 31 proved to the highest. The slide taken from the tower of St Mary's in Taunton, looking north, was reviewed and it provoked a lively discussion. The angle was unfamiliar to people and it took a while to orientate.

At the start, after the notices had been read, and before people knew what was expected of them, a few members said that "they weren't into quizzes" or that "they didn't look forward to being back in school again" but at the end, all had enjoyed the evening, and were able to make a contribution and learned something about the county at the same time.

The next meeting is billed as Michael's Magical Mystery Tour, where members should see some places that are new to them, enjoy a meal and relish each others' company for the evening.
