YOUNG journalists at Sandbach School have received recognition from the Times Educational Supplement.

The school was celebrating the achievements of 14 of its year 9 pupils this week who entered a newspaper competition sponsored by the TES.

The 13 and 14-year-old producers of the Sandbach Tribune' were awarded with a certificate for a commended performance, which is just below a distinction.

The competition, called Newsday', challenged students to spend a day compiling a newspaper featuring both local and national stories.

Sandbach Tribune featured stories written by the boys on subjects as diverse as Zimbabwe, Crewe Alex F.C., the National Health Service and the Cricket World Cup.

The students even got an exclusive article on the recent attacks on schoolgirls in Elworth.

English teacher James Smith who oversaw the production of the newspaper, said: "The boys should be congratulated on their efforts and I'm delighted they have done so well.

"They put a lot of effort in and the paper was really good quality.

"We will be putting in another entry for next year's competition."

TES Newsday is an annual competition to find the best school newspapers in the UK.
