FED-UP residents have signed a petition to demand parking attendants curb their enthusiasm.

People living in Stubsmead, Eldene, admit there is a parking problem in the street but say they have managed it among themselves without any problems.

Now about 100 people have signed up to a petition to complain about parking attendants regularly visiting the road and ticketing their cars.

Debbie Morgan set up the petition and has been in touch with ward councillors and South Swindon MP Anne Snelgrove to find out what can be done.

"There's not enough parking for the cars here. Maybe there was when the houses were built, but not now," she said.

"Everybody muddled through until now, when we have parking tickets regularly given out.

"People have to park on yellow lines as there aren't enough allocated spaces to the groups of houses, and on the grass areas too.

"Everybody was okay with the situation, we weren't happy but this is rubbing salt into the wounds.

"There's one man I feel really sorry for, he often works until one or two in the morning so is still asleep when the wardens come round.

"A lot of us are lucky in that we know when they'll be coming and can move our cars during the daytime."

She said other options, such as using the car park at nearby shops were impractical because of time restrictions and because residents did not want to shove their problem onto other streets.

Debbie said that one ward councillor, Andy James, had told her there were plans for the road, but could not give her any details, while other members knew nothing of this.

"If we were parking in a dangerous place or causing a nuisance I could understand it, but we're getting tickets just for having wheels in the curb to get a bit more out of the road.

"It's just residents parking outside their homes and, on the odd occasion, their visitors.

"My daughter's 17 and not got her licence yet but she's had a ticket today."

A council spokesman said: "We are aware that there are problems with parking in Stubsmead, where the demand for spaces exceeds supply, and we are currently looking at various options to tackle it.

"Cars have been booked by parking attendants in the area because we received complaints from local residents that we were not enforcing the parking restrictions.

"It is important that we strike the right balance between giving residents as many spaces as possible without compromising access for emergency vehicles, or allowing inconsiderate or dangerous parking."
