ROBBIE Hastie was the hero for Upwey as they claimed the first part of what should be a superb double by lifting the Dorset Junior Cup at the Wessex Stadium last night.

Hastie nodded home the winner on 59 minutes for the Dorset League Division Three leaders, who lead second-placed Chickerell United A by three points with six games in-hand.

The Tavern fought hard throughout and created chances but once they went behind they never looked like replying.

Their misery was then completed by a serious injury to Sean Pile who had to leave the ground with five minutes to go in an ambulance.

Winning boss Steve Reynolds said: "It was a good win and a good night. We knew they were going to be a strong side. Their league form does not represent their cup form and they gave us a tough game. We should have had a penalty in the first half when Justin Crawford was brought down by their keeper who admitted it was a foul at half-time but the most unfortunate thing is seeing someone suffer a serious injury.

"That has ruined the night for us really because both sets of players know each other well.

"We are both Weymouth sides and for us both to get to the Junior Cup final says a lot really."

The Tavern's Steve Fookes said: "It was not very good really. We should have created more chances and if you don't hit the target you are not going to win are you?

"We came out in the second half and were positive but once they got the goal we never looked like we would get back into it unfortunately."

Of Pile's injury, Fookes added: "We don't exactly know what he has done yet. We will probably go to the hospital and visit him tomorrow and take his runners-up medal up there.

"Hopefully it is not too serious."

Crawford was at the heart of the action in the first half. Not only did he have a strong penalty appeal turned down but he also had a fine volley on the turn tipped on to the bar by Anthony Mauger.

After the break Chris McIntyre shot wide for the Tavern before their skipper Phil Anderson headed towards goal only to see keeper Paul Bosworth make a fantastic save and push the ball wide.

Hastie finally broke the deadlock by nodding in Lee Fraser's corner at the far-post moments later.
