A CAMPAIGN to protect tenants' deposits will come into effect next month - following backing from Ealing MP Andy Slaughter.

From April 6 all landlords will have to be in a government-approved scheme to protect tenants' deposits.

And now Mr Slaughter, MP for Ealing, Acton and Shepherds Bush, wants to let people know about the new safeguards.

He said: "Parts of my constituency have some of the poorest people, highest deposits, and largest private rented sectors in the country. This measure will give them vital protection.

"This is great news and will directly benefit thousands of tenants who face problems getting their deposit returned, plus provide a vital safety net for both tenants and responsible landlords.

"So from April 6, before signing a new contract, ask your landlord or agent which Tenancy Deposit Protection scheme they are part of as your money will only be protected if your landlord has signed up, which they are now required by law to do."

The new legislation follows a campaign between Shelter and Citizen's Advice, which was backed by Mr Slaughter.

It is hoped the measures will protect the tenants, with more than three-quarters who had money withheld last year complaining it was done so unfairly.

The average deposit for a rental property has now reached £700 in England.
