A POIGNANT memorial to the lives lost in war has been put on display at the Yorkshire Air Museum.

York St John University student Laura Steele, 21, produced hundreds of tiny pottery urns which she then photographed at York War Memorial in a variety of artistic compositions.

The photographs - combined with soothing reflective music and a recital by Canadian veteran John McDermott of the famous poem On Flanders Field, by Lt Col John McRae - capture the spirit of sacrifice made.

In the photographs, one much darker urn can be seen. This represents the percentage of those who lost their lives in the First World War and now lie in marked graves. The rest reflect those who simply disappeared', never to return.

The original urns are also on display at Elvington, in the museum's Station Chapel.

Due to the impact the exhibition has had, the Vice Chancellor of York St John University, Diane Willcocks, visited the museum to meet Laura and view the project.
