There's a pronounced Gallic accent in the final concert of the RSNO's winter season, both in the programming of the overture to Berlioz's youthful, uncompleted opera Les Francs-Juges and in the presence of enigmatic, highly-sought-after pianist Helene Grimaud (a considerable coup for the orchestra) playing Schumann's Piano Concerto. However, the main work in the programme gives RSNO music director Stephane Deneve the chance to get his teeth into one of the great works of Germanic repertoire; Ein Heldenleben, Richard Strauss's tone-poem depicting a hero's life (the composer himself perhaps?) in epic terms.
