Sailors of the warship HMS Cornwall have been straining arm muscles to raise £1,500 for cancer care in Cornwall while on patrol in the Northern Arabian Gulf The Warrant Officer and Chief Petty Officers Mess of Cornwalll's adopted vessel completed a Mount Everest Press-up Charity Challenge in aid of the Macmillan Cancer Support Organisation in Cornwall - the ship's affiliated county.

Over ten days a team of 24 chief petty officers and warrant officers completed 29,030 press-ups which, when measured in distance, equates to the height of Mount Everest at 29,030 feet.

"We needed something interesting and unique to continue with raising money for this special cause and I thought the Mount Everest Press-up Charity Challenge fitted the criteria perfectly," said Chief Petty Officer Peter Johnson.

"The event was scheduled to take two weeks but because of everyone's enthusiasm we completed the task four days earlier than expected. The distance covered during a single press-up was averaged out to be approximately one foot," said Chief Petty Officer TC' Shore who organised the event.

The majority of donations came from members of the ship's company. The Macmillan Cornwall Appeal is providing funding for three developmental Macmillan nurse posts in Cornwall.
