A REAL firefighter has paid tribute to his fictional counterpart who proved a big hit with borough children.

Actor Al Hunter Ashton died of a heart attack recently, aged just 49.

He was best known for his TV role as Pitbull,' the loud-mouthed aggressive fireman in London's Burning but off screen he was a tireless worker for charity, as well as a prolific stage and screen writer.

Last year he made a big impact locally when he attended a charity fundraising day at Corringham fire station organised by local firefighter Darren Clark which raised more than £1,500 for Corringham Primary School's swimming pool appeal.

Mr Clark was shocked to hear of the actor's premature death and paid tribute to him.

"He was superb on the day. We only expected him to be here for about an hour but he stayed all day with his young son and really go involved.

"He helped make it such a success and he was really great with all the kids.

"I am so shocked to hear of his death and can only send condolences to his family. It's a real tragedy, particularly as he had a young family. He will be warmly remembered here."

Mr Hunter Ashton also had links with the local Stage 22 School of Arts. Stage 22 principal and MD, Kieran Woodbury said: "Al became a noted figure within Stage 22, advising lots of the children on the performing arts industry, giving talks, helping children with scriptwriting and appearing in our Christmas pantomime at the Towngate Theatre.

"My thoughts are with Anne, his family and in particular his two young children of whom many of the Stage 22 children got to know well. Al's passing was sudden and is very sad; he will be sorely missed."

Mr Hunter Ashton's funeral will be on Friday and even to the end he will be helping raise funds for good causes.

Instead of flowers donations are being taken in Al's memory to the Special Pool Appeal at Maplewood School, an all age school providing education and care for children with severe special needs. Any donations should be sent to Arnold Funeral Service, 891 London Road, Loudwate, High Wycombem, HP10 9TB.
