LUKE Varney says this season isn't over for him as he bids to end a golden one on a real high.

Although Crewe's disappointing campaign has been fizzling out for a couple of weeks, credit goes to all the lads for weighing in with a quality performance against Oldham.

And Varney has vowed to give it everything and extend his 25-goal tally if selected in the Alex's two final games.

Tranmere arrive on Saturday, followed by a trip to promotion-hopefuls Nottingham Forest.

Many supporters will be hoping the two fixtures don't prove to be the 24-year-old's swansong after coming of age this season.

He's been a revelation and probably would have bagged 30 if not for breaking his foot at the beginning of March.

With club awards likely to soon follow, Varney was in London on Sunday after being selected in the PFA League One Team of the Year alongside surprise inclusion Jon Otsemobor.

"I'm very proud," he said.

"It's been a great season and all the work has been worth it.

"I saw David James crediting his clean sheets to all the team and he's right.

"Ryan Lowe has set up a lot of mine along with the play with Nicky so it's a team effort.

"It was great to rub shoulders and see some of the top footballers in the country.

"People were asking me if it was my first season there and hopefully it will be the first of many."

Varney has made a double-quick recovery, replacing Nicky Maynard in the 2-1 victory over Oldham.

"I'm pleased to be back," he added.

"I've been gutted we haven't been getting the results but I was pleased for the lads on Saturday.

"I think that proved that we can beat anyone in this league.

"Everyone performed to near their top level and that's what we need to do week in, week out.

"That's what we'll need to do to stamp our authority on this league next season.

"I'm sure the coaching staff are disappointed with this season because the players are.

"We wanted to get into the top six.

"I saw Chris Shuker (Tranmere), he said they've got nothing to play for and it won't be going out all guns blazing.

"I know I will. We want to do well for the fans.

"Vale was a real low point and on a personal note, I want to show what I'm worth."
