WITHIN the walls and corridors of Andover War Memorial Hospital lies a courtyard oasis of container plants and shrubs.

The Jessie Threadgill Garden with its superb herbaceous borders has become a hive of industry for Tony Shepstone and Brian Critcher, League of Friends volunteers.

The large well-equipped greenhouse accommodates over 40 different varieties of plants.

In early spring they start to be hardened off and by the end of April most are ready to be sold.

This professional approach usually encourages bought plants to grow on rapidly.

Difficult cuttings have become more successful with time, and the exotic and unusual can be found among some 3,000 plants.

Over recent years these efforts have raised almost £10,000 for the hospital, thanks to staff members for their support and members of the watering team who pump water on thirsty plants during holidays.

Brian Critcher said: "The Jessie Threadgill Garden can be found to the rear of the Minor Injuries Unit, and is open all year round on Wednesdays between 9am and 4pm.

"We would appreciate any donations of unusual plants suitable for taking cuttings."
