The thing about Burgundy is that no one else can make wines like it. In these hallowed soils, in the hands of a good grower, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are made into sublime and complex wines. What's the secret? Scientists have prowled around the vineyards, noted the exposure of the slopes, measured the microclimates and analysed the soils, and still they don't know what makes Burgundy so good. Perhaps some things are best enjoyed and not understood.

The Mixed Burgundy Case costs £121 and includes three bottles of each of the following four wines: Macon Villages, Chateau de Mirande 2005 Macon is that verdant area south of the Cote d'Or and north of Beaujolais that is famous for producing great value Burgundy and this wine is no exception; crisp and clean with light buttery tones, this is a great wine for drinking either on its own or with fish dishes.

Saint Veran, Les Pierres Blanches, Cave de Prisse 2005 The Cave de Prisse has produced this Saint Veran from the excellent 2005 vintage that resulted in many lovely wines being made in Burgundy. Subtle mineral tones and ripe fruit complement each other perfectly here, making a delicate but fruitful wine of poise and finesse.

Givry Champs Lalot, Domaine Michel Sarrazin 2004, Located in the heart of Burgundy's Cote Chalonnaise, this family estate with 30 hectares of vines has its origins in the 17th century. The estate is run by Michel's two sons, who have produced this smooth, silky red from their Pinot Noir vineyards, which shows wonderful raspberry and strawberry fruit and a good long finish.

Auxey Duresses, Louis Jadot 2000: Founded in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, Maison Louis Jadot is situated in the centre of Beaune and is one of the leading négociants in Burgundy. The Auxey Duresses 2000 is a nicely mature and mellow wine with smooth-textured fruit that is just approaching its peak in terms of age - perfect to drink now.
