AN historic souvenir of Darwen 100 years ago has been discovered during a house clearance.

Brenda Cronshaw, of Brenda's Collectables, in Darwen Three Day Market, found the tea towel during a house clearance and now wants some information about its history.

It was produced by the Co-op food store, which was celebrating 50 years in the town in 1910.

The store stood in School Street, Darwen, and was replaced by other shops in the 1960s.

The Children's Jubilee Souvenir was given to children in 1910 by the Darwen Industrial Co-operative Society Ltd. A picture of the town centre store is in the centre of the tea towel.

Brenda sells and has an interest in pictures and memorabilia of old Darwen and she said in more than 25 years at Darwen Market she had never come across another such item.

Brenda said: "I think it is a wonderful piece of Darwen history. I wonder if there are any more left in Darwen, how many were made and what other souvenirs were produced at the time?

"I sold it to a Darrener and I know it will stay in Darwen and will keep the history of the town alive."
