Newly-promoted South Shields are the surprise package in the Northern Rock North East Premier League. A second win ensured they continued to head the table with their powerhouse rivals, South Northumberland, the only other side to have a 100 per cent record.

Shields won by a single wicket in a nail-biting finish against Chester-le-Street, who challenged them to top 200 after Quinten Hughes (81) and Anthony Birbeck (66) with Chester totalling 227.

In reply, the leaders, promoted from the Durham Senior League at the end of last season, enjoyed a excellent start with Whalley (54), Doropolous (42), Stedman (42) and Danny Shurben (39) putting them into a winning position. But Chester's Moneeb Iqbal (6 for 63) gave them a few frights and only a last wicket partnership saw Shields pass their target.
