USEFUL advice on how to be careful in the sun will be offered by health experts at a week-long event held at Russells Hall Hospital.

The sun awareness campaign, which starts next Monday (May 7), will be staged in the main entrance to Russells Hall Hospital with a manned display offering advice on skin care in the sun.

Leaflets will explain how to regularly check for moles and what signs to look out for.

Between 10am and 4pm next Tuesday (May 8), representatives from Cielo Day Spa will demonstrate their skin scanner which shows what damage has been caused to skin by the sun.

On Thursday (May 10) demonstrations of the trust's Solar Scan machine will take place.

The scanner, used to scan moles, was donated last year by skin cancer patient and fundraiser Jacqui Davies.

Tracy Taylor, a cancer nurse specialist in skin care oncology, who is leading the skincare in the sun campaign, said: "The number of incidences of skin cancer are increasing year by year and it's really important that we understand the risks associated with the sun.

"Parents particularly need to be aware of the simple steps that they should take to keep their children protected from childhood sunburn."
