A 20-year-old pedestrian died after a collision with a car.

The victim was thought to have been crossing the busy A133 road, just beyond the Greenstead roundabout, Colchester, when the incident happened yesterday.

Emergency crews were called to the scene shortly after 2.50pm following calls from panicked witnesses.

The road was closed in both directions while paramedics worked to save the man.

He was pronounced dead after several resuscitation attempts.

Police investigators were last night trying to piece together the cause.

They kept the road shut until 7pm to preserve the scene. Police will name the man once his family have been informed.

The driver of the silver Vauxhall Astra car, thought to be a local woman in her 80s, was said to be shaken but uninjured.

She was taken to Colchester General Hospital for assessment.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash. Anyone with information is asked to contact Stanway road policing unit on 01206 762212.
