AN ARMY of volunteers will be keeping watch to stop thieves stealing rare avocet eggs at a breeding ground in south Essex.

In previous years crooks have raided the bird's nests at their breeding grounds on Two Tree Island, in Leigh, for sale to collectors on the lucrative black market.

Last year the villains were thwarted by a band of 80 hardy volunteers organised by Essex Wildlife Trust who kept watch over the eggs 24-hours-a-day until more than 30 chicks hatched.

Volunteers are again needed throughout May and June to watch over the eggs and report any suspicious behaviour near the eggs to police.

Avocets are a protected species and it is illegal to harm them or steal their eggs. Breaking the law can lead to a £5,000 fine and six months in prison.

In 2004 and 2005, thieves stole eggs from nests on Two Tree Island just days before they were due to hatch.

Claire Cadman, of Essex Wildlife Trust, said: "Just one visit really can make a difference. I would be grateful to as many volunteers as possible to come forward and work with the trust. It's a great reason to visit this superb nature reserve."

Volunteers should telephone 07899 882651.
