A THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD boy created a piece of squash history in the Hambleton Ales North Yorkshire Squash Cup.

Ross MacDonald became the youngest winner of a divisional cup final after defeating 18-year-old Will Abbotson at Leyburn.

The young Harrogate Squash Club player took the match 9-4 9-7 9-1.

His game has shown such improvement recently that he looks set to propel himself into regular first division squash next season from his current division three status.

The clash between the two also broke another record as the combined ages of the two competitors were the youngest since the contest started.

Abbotson, who plays for Thorp Perrow, covered much of the court, but in the end it was MacDonald's control which triumphed over enthusiasm.

The division one cup winner was fifth seed Paul Hotchkiss of Harrogate Squash, who defeated Leyburn's top seed Nick Brown 9-5 9-1 9-1.

Harlow player Dan Lupton is the division two cup winner. He defeated John Evans of Bedale 9-4 10-8 9-3.

In the five-man team finals at Harrogate, the A final was won 3-2 by Harrogate Squash Club B against their C team.

In the B final, Bedale were 4-1 winners over Thirsk. Dave Horner, John Abbotson, Mike Richardson and Gary Fullegar steered Bedale to success, with Thirsk's lone response coming from Shaun Holme.

In the plate finals at Bedale, Boroughbrige took the A contest 4-1 against Harlow.

Simon Robinson, John Plunkett, Alistair Hogg and Andy Sykes took the rubbers for Bridge, while the Harlow response came from Ivan Patchett.

Pateley Bridge were 3-2 winners of the B plate final against Harrogate Squash F team.
