Evesham 33pts, Old Leamingtonians17 ON a glorious afternoon on Albert Road on Saturday, Evesham concluded their home league matches with a rearranged fixture against their old foes from Warwickshire.

The home side picked a side that was hoping to run the bigger Old Leams pack around the park but, for the first half-an-hour, Evesham didn't see much possession.

The visiting pack controlled the ball well for the early enc-ounters and played to their strengths. And, incredibly, they scored three quick tries to stun the hosts and their large group of supporters.

Skipper Luke Matthews duly sounded a rallying cry and fin-ally Evesham got some quality ball to attack with.

A few opportunities were created but the Avonsiders fell short of getting that all important first try. All that could be mustered was a penalty kicked by Will Badger.

Evesham, though, with time running out in the first half had another penalty just wide out. But instead of kicking for goal they elected to kick for the line-out.

An excellent catch by Stuart Stock resulted in a quick drive towards the Old Leams line where No 8 Samuel Wigg bar-ged over for an unconverted try.

Evesham went into half-time trailing 17 -8 but gave themselves a sniff of an chance with that last score.

The second half was totally different affair with the home side chancing their luck and attacking at all opportunities.

The forwards were now competing stronger in the breakdown situations and half-backs Chris Evis and Roly Holt grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and kept Old Leams out of the match for long periods.

Evesham's attacking play was superb but it was their strong defence time and again that turned defence into attack.

The whole forward pack worked tirelessly to provide ball for the Evesham back line to exploit and the home side scored a further four tries.

Badger, Jim Bowen, Stuart Stock and finally Matt Jaques all crossed for excellent scores, while the former kicked a further conversion as the hosts rattled up 33 unanswered points to complete a tremendous team effort.

The winners travel to Coventry to face Copsewood on Saturday in their final league match and the following week are due to face Redditch at home for their last game of the season.
