NORTON Fitzwarren Village Hall will be celebrating St George's Day with a Traditional Family Barn Dance, on Saturday, April 21, at 7pm.

There will be live music from local band, Fresh Aire and the ticket price includes a Bangers and Mash Supper.

St George and the Dragon have particular significance for Norton Fitzwarren.

Jean Court-Stenning said: "According to legend a dragon was generated from the blood spilled during a ferocious battle on Norton Hill Fort.

"This dragon ate its' way through the village population until it was killed by local hero Fulke Fitzwarren. The dragon can be seen in action in a carving on the church rood screen, swallowing his victim whole - an image which has kept countless generations entertained during church services!"

The dragon has been adopted as the village emblem. In the Village Hall, a dragon banner hangs in the Marshall Room.

It's appropriate that the village should remember both its' dragon and its' benefactor, Wilfred George, by celebrating St George's Day.

Everyone is invited to attend the Barn Dance, held in their honour, on Saturday, April 21.

Tickets are available in advance from Jean Court-Stenning on 01823-256071.

Family Tickets (2 adults, 2 children) cost £20, adults £7.50 and children under 16 £5.
