MR Martin Crampton, a local business man, took over as Mullion Golf club captain for 2007 at the annual general meeting on Friday.

Martin lives in Nantithet, Cury, and is married to Mary, a former lady captain at the club.

Martin has been a club member since 1982 and in his acceptance speech said he was looking forward to the year ahead when he hoped that the club would go from strength to strength.

Pamela Stanley took over as lady captain at Mullion Golf Club after being elected at the ladies annual general meeting.

Pamela is a long time resident of Mullion, having lived in the village for 35 years and joined the golf club in 1992. Her husband, Ian, is also an enthusiastic golfer and was the club captain in 2004.

Pamela feels privileged to serve as lady captain and is looking forward to a great year of golf with all the Mullion ladies and also to competing in the league matches and other competitions played throughout the county.

The golfing season opened at Mullion with the Spring Meeting on Sunday. The competition, an 18-hole Stableford with the winner receiving the prestigious Cyril Lane Cup, was played in cold and windy conditions.

With the easterly wind making it very difficult to score, only five players managed to return a score of 35pts or better.

In division one young Leo Acklin (handicap 3) just managed to beat Patrick Gilbert (handicap 4), both returning 35 points, but Leo winning with a better back nine holes.

The Cyril Lane Cup was won by division two player Neil Carpenter, (handicap 14) just beating Paul Hopkins (handicap 24). Both returned an excellent score of 38 points, but Neil won the day with 20 points on the back nine.

Results - Division One: 1, L Acklin, 35pts; 2, P A Gilbert, 35pts; 3, G Tamblyn, 33pts.

Division II: 1, N Carpenter, 38pts; 2, P Hopkins, 38pts; 3, J Hunt, 37pts After the presentation of prizes the club captain for 2007 Martin Crampton, carried out his "Drive In" ably assisted by the club president, Mr Derek Watts.

At the ladies' dinner the results of the Winter League were presented. The overall winner was Helen Carson on 51 points, just two ahead of Alison Jacka and Janet Penlerick both having 49 points each.

Also awarded was the LGU annual medals, the silver medal to Jane Henderson and the bronze medal to Rosemary Sanders.

On Saturday the junior section of Mullion Golf Club played a qualifying Stableford competition for the Whirlwind Trophy which is run throughout the summer months. The very good scores from divisional winners Jordan Antrobus and Tom Neal meant a handicap cut for both.

Division One: 1, Jordan Antrobus, 45pts; 2, Jack Irwin, 37pts; 3, Ben Williams, 36pts; 4, Rob Jenkins, 34pts.

Division Two: 1, Tom Neal, 44pts; 2, Sam Orchard, 34pts; 3, Tommy Carson, 31pts (B.9); 4, Jacob Rae, 31pts.
