AS we know, image can reveal someone who inspires, but it can also be the focus of controversy.

Good or bad, image is influential in the way many children think in terms of fashion and lifestyle. The size zero issue, and concerns regarding obesity, impact on shaping the future and attitudes of a growing generation.

Your story, "Boozy soaps setting a bad example'" (Echo, Mar 10), reported on a survey by The Food Commission which revealed that TV soaps are broadcasting scenes involving alcohol before the socalled watershed.

Such an image could be conditioning teenagers to think that high consumption is the norm. The same goes for violence.

TV soaps have been responsible for portraying social issues through good storylines and in so doing have acted responsibly. I think it is important for programme makers and the media in general to promote "balance" while retaining the entertainment value of drama.

Equally, as role models, everyone who has influence has to take their responsibilities seriously. Image without substance is purely superficial. Sadly, much of our everyday influences are built upon superficiality.
