A MARATHON-mad runner from Canvey is lacing up his running shoes to tackle the London course for the 21st time.

Peter Montague, 53, is something of a marathon veteran after completing a total of 69 races all over the world, including New York, Paris, Rome and Berlin.

Over the years, he has pounded the streets of the capital dressed in a variety of weird and wonderful costumes, from a grenadier guard, to Snow White and Bob the Builder.

This year the grandfather-of-one is hoping to don fancy dress again, as either a pirate, Lord Nelson or Popeye, in a bid to raise more than £1,300 for Little Havens Children's Hospice.

Asked what keeps him training, year after year Mr Montague, of The Driveway said: "The London marathon is such an incredible day, I still get the same buzz as the first time.

"The training is intensive, but I enjoy it.

"London is probably the best in the world for crowds and organisation, it's become a massive day out for people."

Since undertaking his first challenge, Mr Montague, who works as a head groundsman at Belhus Park Golf Club, in South Ockendon, has raised more than £10,000 for children's charities.

He added: "The best part of the day is definitely the people.

"Everyone pulls each other through, it is an incredible experience.

"On the downside, I will be aching a bit on Monday, but it's only for a little while.

"You know you are going to hurt, but it's worth it all," he said.
