HISTORY maker David Bentley today spoke of his pride at becoming the first Englishman to score at the new Wembley.

The Blackburn midfielder etched his name in football folklore when he stepped up to curl an exquisite 25-yard free kick past Gianluca Curci during England Under 21s' epic 3-3 draw with Italy at the weekend.

Bentley said he was honoured' to claim a place in the record books, and, after experiencing the thrill of playing at Wembley, he insists he's now even more determined than ever to return there with Blackburn Rovers for the FA Cup final on May 19.

"That's the dream now," said the 22-year-old.

"It's every player's dream to win the FA Cup, and to win it at Wembley would be even better. That really would be amazing!

"Hopefully, I've got a bit of luck there now so I'm looking to come back."

England were already trailing 1-0 to a goal from Gianpaolo Pazzini, who scored after just 29 seconds, when Bentley's magic moment arrived in the 31st minute.

The Italians conceded a free kick on the edge of their own penalty area, and Bentley promptly stepped forward and curled an unstoppable shot with his right-foot inside the left-hand post.

Describing the moment he saw it hit the back of the net, he said: "It was a great feeling.

"It's every player's dream to score at Wembley, and to do on such an occasion was a brilliant feeling.

"I just wanted to put in a performance and play to a high level again, and that's what I felt I did. To score as well was an added bonus.

"I put it down and hit it. I've got belief in my ability that I can hit a ball like that, and when it went in, I was delighted."

As a child growing up, Bentley used to dream about scoring at Wembley, so to fulfil that ambition, and on such an historic occasion, was the stuff of fantasy.

He added: "It's a great honour for me, to be honest.

"All my friends and family were up in the stands, and all the fans seemed to love their day out.

"I'm like a fan myself. I've watched England teams in the past and I know what a feeling I get when I'm sat in the stands.

"So to be out there playing the game that I love and scoring a goal on such a special occasion was amazing."

Bentley was not the only Blackburn player who scored at Wembley on Saturday: team-mate Matt Derbyshire also grabbed a goal on his England debut.
